WINNERS ARE GRINNERS!![]() The Bay Rollers had our first travel team win on Saturday night, beating the Tweed Valley Vixens 237 – 50. Held in Lismore, this was the first game of the North Coast Derby Coalition for 2012, we came out firing with jammers Pinky Bruista, Tank U and Kaos Kontrol taking an early lead. Jamming for the first time, Leggy Bomb and Slingshot Polkadot were crowd favourites while our defensive strategies kept the opposition at bay. We did end up with three blockers in the penalty box at the end of the first half, but by half time were up 33 – 83. Keeping calm and collected, we pushed their way to a record 154 points in the second half, keeping the Vixens to just 17. In the other game of the night, Northern Rivers Roller Derby (Lismore) came out on top against Clarence Valley Roller Derby League (Yamba) 227 – 60. Have you seen this man? Chances are, probably not because Certified Male has been too busy reffing roller derby games! If you used to skate, or maybe have always wanted to then the Bay Rollers are always looking for referees! Email us on info@bayrollers.com to find out more.
![]() WHY DO WE DO DERBY?
A few words from our ex-Prez Uzi Quatro...
It is a physical outlet for bottled frustration and anger. I'm a mum, and a wife. I spend a lot of time biting my tongue living in the highly opinionated Byron Shire. On training nights I finally get to let loose, knock someone the **** over... swear...yell... All the things I can't do at other times for fear of hurting someone (or their feelings). I take out my anger at derby so I don't take it out on my husband or my kids. We do it to feel empowered... to reclaim our body after pregnancies, and to look in the mirror and appreciate the booty we were given that can block some jammer to kingdom come, instead of thinking that we are not perfect enough... to inspire my kids, that they can do whatever they set their mind to... There are alot of reasons besides just "liking" it. I know I'm not the only person on my team who found derby after a "loss" either (i.e. divorce, death, loss of a job, or feeling lost in a community that you don’t fit into to). Why do we all know the slogan "Derby Saved My Life"... many of us are here for something a little deeper than the fun. I think Derby is more like an addiction... it is something that starts off being done for the fun, but slowly becomes something that the person involved feels compelled to do? It helps improve you physically and mentally. Derby is almost a life metaphor – you get knocked down, it doesn’t matter who did it – you just have to get back up and keep on skating! I love how playing strengthens your capacity for strategising on a moments notice. It helps with problem solving and mental toughness and agility. You must be aware of every player in space time and how that affects the game, memorize and understand how rules play out, and push yourself further than you once thought you were capable. I realised that this is what had been missing in my life for so long, this wonderful space where women can come together and be strong and be themselves without the constraints or judgment of day to day life. Over the last two years skating has been my therapist, weight watchers meeting, & mistress. The fashion & freedom of speech in derby has kept me feeling young and sexy. At 42 I don't know how much longer I will be playing derby, but I know that what ever comes next I will have my 8 wheels under me supporting me through what ever life throws at me next. DERBYLICIOUS CUPCAKES!
Yes, the bake sale is on tomorrow but we just couldn't keep these roller derby cupcakes a secret! Made by the lovely Crystal Beth, who also runs the derby friendly cafe The Empire on Burringbar St, Mullumbimby, you can get yourself a derby bum cupcake or a jammer & pivot cupcakes. See you from 9.30am, cnr of Myocum & Jubilee Streets, Mullumbimby.
